How to Style an Oversized Coat This Autumn

The oversized coat is the season's most versatile investment. Whether you're heading to the office, stepping out at the weekend, or dressing for an evening out, one well-chosen coat can carry an entire wardrobe. Here is how to wear it well.

01 — Proportion is everything

The key to an oversized coat is balance. If the coat is wide through the shoulders and long through the body, wear something fitted underneath — a slim knit, a straight-leg trouser, or a sleek midi dress. Let the coat do the work. Avoid pairing with wide-leg trousers unless you are working with a cropped hem, as the overall silhouette can lose its shape.

02 — Lean into a tonal palette

Autumn dressing is at its most powerful when the palette is cohesive. Camel on cream, charcoal on black, chocolate with rust — tonal dressing allows the coat's cut and texture to speak for itself. Add a single point of contrast if needed: a burgundy bag, an ivory scarf, a polished loafer in cognac.

03 — The half-tuck and the belt

An oversized coat can easily overwhelm a smaller frame. To create shape without compromising the coat's relaxed silhouette, loosely belt it at the waist — not cinched, just resting. Alternatively, half-tuck a fine-knit into wide trousers beneath the coat. Both techniques add intentionality to what might otherwise read as shapeless.

04 — Footwear grounds the look

A long, oversized coat works best with footwear that adds a little height or structure at the base — a pointed ankle boot, a block-heeled loafer, or a sleek flat mule. Chunky trainers can work with a more casual coat in a shorter length, but avoid anything too bulky beneath a longer hem as it breaks the line of the silhouette.

05 — Wear it open, always

The most effortless way to wear an oversized coat is simply to leave it open. Buttoning it changes the silhouette entirely and often works against the coat's proportions. Drape it over the shoulders on milder days for an even more relaxed effect — a styling trick that works particularly well with a structured bag and minimal accessories.
